3 myths that a Locksmith may tell you to try to get your business.

1. The state of Michigan does not license Locksmiths. Don’t be fooled into believing the Locksmith who comes to you is licensed. More importantly: Are you understanding the charges? Do they carry liability insurance? Can they show you? Are they experienced in your specific needs?

 2. Also, bonding is basically an insurance policy to protect you if a loss occurs due to theft from a Locksmith.  How it works is that the Locksmith or Locksmith co. purchases a bond. If a technician is accused, arrested, tried and found guilty of theft of your goods then the bonding company will pay up to the maximum of what the bond is valid for. IE. $10,000.00. This is not a bad criteria to look for when selecting a Locksmith but should not be a “cure all” for educating yourself and selecting a well established, honest and insured Locksmith.

3. Lastly, the Better Business Bureau is also just a “tool” similar to Angie’s List that does keep information regarding complaints against companies. When a company shows that they are a member of the BBB remember “member’  any company can pay for membership. You can pay to be part of most reporting agencies or companies.  I get canvased regularly to join many. Don’t let that be the deciding factor in choosing a Locksmith. Call friends, relatives, co-workers etc. to get a referral if possible. If you have an emergency then use your judgement, ask questions and get a price. Do not allow the dispatcher to use the scam “the technician will tell you when they arrive”.

Low cost upfront may be high cost in the end!
