Generally the last thing that a first-time college student is thinking about is safety and security. Outfitting and decorating the dorm room, learning where classes are held and adjusting to being on their own are usually foremost in a new college student’s mind. That makes them vulnerable to becoming a victim of theft. There are some simple steps a first-time college student can take to ensure that their college experience will be safe and problem-free.
Locksmiths are a great resource for safety tips and security advice so make sure to reach out.
Tip #1: Be Aware of Crime on Campus
While the saying “ignorance is bliss” can apply in some situations, ignorance can be costly when dealing with security issues. The U.S. Department of Education actually collects and publishes Campus Crime Statistics to help students be more aware of campus crimes in order to avoid victimization. The online data at found here also helps parents and students compare campus safety statistics.
Tip #2: Know How to Quickly Contact Campus Security
The majority of college campuses have a campus security office. Students should research how to contact campus security and input the campus security number into their smartphones for easy access when needed. Many universities now offer campus security apps for smartphones which will alert students to active shooter situations, weather alerts and other critical information. If the campus has alarm systems located at various spots on campus, students should familiarize themselves with those locations.
Campus security offices also offer security education and training. The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety & Security, for example, offers an Empowerment Self Defense Workshop, a Responding to An Active Attacker Workshop, a See Something? / Say Something! crime prevention presentation, and a Workplace & Classroom Violence & Dealing with Difficult People presentation.2 Most major universities also regulate the use of security cameras on campus so it is advisable for students wanting to install security cameras in campus housing to contact the campus security office for advice and approval before installing a security camera.
Tip #3: Buy a Backpack with Anti-Theft Features
Your backpack generally contains not only your computer and cell phone but also books, assignments and other important documents. Spending a bit more to buy a backpack with anti-theft features can help keep you safe from theft.
Anti-theft features to look for include slash-proof fabric, hidden zippers or pockets, locks and RFID blocking.3 Because backpacks are worn over the shoulders you can’t see what is happening behind you. If your backpack fabric can be cut with a knife it makes it easier to steal valuables. Hidden zippers or pockets help keep sensitive documents away from the reach of pick-pockets. RFID or radio frequency identification device blocking is a feature which prevents your credit card or other identification card data from being transmitted to a thief who is nearby.
Another added security measure is to install tracking devices in your backpack and on all important items, like computers and cellular phones, in the event the items are stolen. Bluetooth trackers are relatively inexpensive costing from $22 to $55.4
Tip #4: Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
As our society, and especially college-age students, rely more and more on smartphones, we also become more unaware of our environment. It is not uncommon to see students walking or eating in a restaurant with their attention glued to their smartphone screen. When this happens, students aren’t aware of people paying special attention to them or their belongings, which is an invitation to victimization. Make sure that even when you are using headphones for outdoor exercise, or just walking on campus, that you stay aware of what is happening around you.5
Tip #5: Secure your Valuables
A lock for your laptop is a must have for college students. Costing anywhere from $20 to $50, a laptop lock is an inexpensive investment. Many laptops have a Kensington lock slot so installation is simplified.6 If a Kensington lock slot is not available on your computer there are other ways to attach the lock.
A professional locksmith can help you determine the best lock for your situation and assist in installing the lock securely. Students should also consider a safe for their valuables. Dorm room or apartment safes should be convenient to operate and to affix to a bed or dresser as well as big enough for the valuables being stored and they should have locks and hardware that make them difficult to break into.7 A professional locksmith can also advise on the best dorm or apartment safe.
While heading off to college should be a time of growth and learning, it shouldn’t be marred by victimization. Following these simple tips will help ensure a safe and happy college experience. #####
