The new access control systems are using smart phones as swipe cards/badges/credentials. you have an ap on your telephone with all of the correct information and you present your phone to the reader if accepted the door can be open. The process is not new it has expanded from the RFID technology. Some of you may already use your smart phones to make purchases at the register or ATM machines. You may have your credit cards stored for use on the phone. Now gain access to your employment, school, house etc…
It is called Near field communication (NFC). According to the Locksmith Ledger magazine the system works on a standards-based connectivity technology for smart phones and similar type devices to provide contact-less wireless connections and data exchange between two devices in close proximity.
Because so many of us carry our smart phones and such and treasure it we are more likely to maintain control of it and not lose it thus eliminating the need to replace badges and cards regularly.
